Functional Anatomy of the Urogenital Tract 


The number of elderly people in our western societies will triple within the next 20 years and in inevitable conjunction with these demographic changes, the percentage of age-related diseases will increase considerably. However, many of the tissue-specific changes that occur as a result of aging are not yet defined in humans, making it problematic to distinguish between "normal" and "pathological" aging processes.

Established in 2000, our group is concerned with research of the functional anatomy and pathophysiology of the human urogenital tract during aging. In this context, we are especially interested in the diverse pathomechanisms leading to the highly prevalent bladder dysfunctions associated with urinary incontinence. Scientific focus is currently on myogenic factors contributing to disease development and progression in the human detrusor, including novel aspects of gap junction coupling or expression of contractile proteins, such as smoothelin.

In order to complement our studies in patients, a model of the in-vitro perfused whole porcine bladder was recently established.

In addition, we are pursueing a couple of projects related to prostate cancer research, including effects of xenoestrogens or the actions of photosensitizers.
